Birthing hormones

As the say “knowledge is power”.  So when you know how things work, you can take advantage of this to optimise your chances of a smooth and calm birth experience.

Oxytocin AKA the love hormone, is a natural hormone our bodies make when we are, eating, breastfeeding, making love and when we are in labour. Anything that can make you anxious causes your body to produce adrenaline and catachalomines, these hormones inhibit the body from producing oxytocin. What’s valuable to know is that when your natural oxytocin flow’s, your body will produce melatonin (relaxing hormones) and endorphins (natural pain relief). Therefor the more relaxed mum is feeling the better!

Here are 3 things we can do to stimulate those natural birthing hormones.

  • 1. Birth partner can do what we call ’the light touch massage’. This has been enjoyed by many hypnobirthing mums over the years including myself.

  • 2. Breathing techniques, it can again be helpful for birth partner to encourage mum to concentrate on those deep breaths.

  • 3. Low light & quiet room, allows mum to feel relaxed and undisturbed during labour.

  • 4. Bonus tip Relaxed jaw, means relaxed cervix.

Keep your eyes peeled for not birth related content. If you're pregnant I wish you all the positive, calm and beautiful birthing vibes 🥰
